Tickets, opening hours and tips for Rome's great monuments
From our accommodation at Via Tommaso Campanella 68, Rome's main monuments are within easy reach. Monument by monument, here is where to buy official tickets, when to go and the advice we give our guests to avoid queues and overpriced resellers.
Rome's most visited complex: the galleries, the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel. It is about an 8-minute walk from the apartments, no transport needed.
How to buy tickets
Buy only on the official Vatican Museums website: tickets are personal and include a timed entry slot.
Book 30–60 days ahead in high season — morning slots sell out first.
Avoid street sellers and unofficial sites: they add large mark-ups and cannot guarantee entry.
Opening hours
Monday to Saturday, with last admission about two hours before closing.
Closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month with free entry (not recommended, queues are very long).
In spring and summer, evening openings are often available at weekends, by reservation.
Our host tips
Strict dress code: shoulders and knees covered for men and women, or access to the Sistine Chapel is refused.
Pick the first slot of the day or the late afternoon: crowds are far thinner.
Walking route: from Via Tommaso Campanella take Via Candia and follow the Vatican walls to the Viale Vaticano entrance.
